Our Mission
At Story Sunbirds, our mission is to cultivate a dynamic and inclusive children's literature community rooted in justice and anti-racism and anti-colonialism. As a collective of writers, illustrators, and publishing professionals, we prioritize the holistic growth and needs of all children, ensuring their voices and experiences are at the forefront of our creative work.We believe in the power of collaboration between creatives and publishing professionals and partners, fostering a culture of access and inclusivity rather than gatekeeping. To support this, we are dedicated to facilitating professional development and both formal and informal connections, safe spaces, and opportunities through mentorship, classes, workshops, meet-ups, and seminars, empowering individuals to learn, build, and flourish within our industry—in all its branches and forms.Our commitment to opposing white supremacy and recognizing the interconnectedness of all forms of oppression guides our actions in how we nurture community as well as our efforts to advocate and agitate for a more equitable, inclusive, justice-oriented industry. We expect better and will ask for better—more truth-telling, more welcoming, more reciprocity.Human rights serve as our foundation, with Palestine as our starting place, driving us to make and promote literature that empowers and uplifts all children. Together, we strive to build a kidlit community where every child can experience themselves and their worlds in the stories they read and where their potential knows no bounds.
